New Laws for Hotels
With new laws taking effect in multiple states, California hotels (and soon New York) have created new legislation switching to refillable dispensers for their shampoos and conditioners.
These new laws set a precedent other states are soon going to follow.
Big hotel chains like Marriott and InterContinental started offering bulk liquid bath amenities on their properties as early as 2020.
It makes sense. Why pollute the earth will billions of small plastic travel size toiletries when you can use bulk dispensers that can be refilled.
What’s Behind The New Regulations
New laws are going into effect requiring all hotels to use refillable dispensers for their shampoos and conditioners instead of those tiny little travel size bottles.
There are a few reasons behind this new regulation. First of all, it will help reduce the amount of plastic waste that ends up in landfills. According to the EPA, Americans alone generate about 35.4 million tons of plastic waste each year, and a good portion of that comes from those tiny little bottles of shampoo and conditioner.
Secondly, it will save water. A lot of water is used to make those small bottles of shampoo and conditioner, and then even more water is used to wash them once they’re empty. With refillable dispensers, there’s no need to use all that water to make and wash new bottles.
And lastly, it will save money. Those small bottles of shampoo and conditioner are not cheap, and hotels go through a lot of them. With refillable dispensers, hotels will be able to save money on their toiletry costs.
What This Means for Hotels
Starting in California and New York, they will need to switch to using refillable dispensers for their shampoos and conditioners. There are a few different options available, so they will need to choose the ones that work best for their properties.
Some hotels may choose to install dispensers in each bathroom, while others may choose to have them in the hallway outside of the bathrooms.
Whichever way they choose to do it, guests will still be able to get their hands on the toiletries they need without having to use those wasteful little bottles.
Of course, there will be a bit of an adjustment period as guests get used to the new dispensers. But once they do, it will be much easier and more environmentally-friendly way to get their toiletries while staying at a hotel.
